Scientists have reported 721 sea turtle nests on the beaches of Sarasota!
This represents the highest number in almost a decade! Loggerhead turtles represent the greatest percentage, with green sea turtles close behind.
Experts are speculating as to the upturn, in a year that record cold and an oil spill were expected to stunt the numbers. With just the opposite occurring, they are keeping a close eye on the populations.
Residents are well versed in sea turtle conservation, and know to steer clear of the nests, as well as keep lights off at night so as not to confuse hatchlings who follow moonlight. However, this year there is some concern as some of the nesting areas have been vandalized; thankfully no eggs have been disturbed.
