No Oil Here!
I was stunned to learn in the Herald Tribune this week that an informal poll of Americans revealed that nearly half of those not lucky enough to live in Florida – HALF! – are under the impression that there is oil on all Florida Gulf beaches, Sarasota beaches included.
But the fact is, Florida is big, and we have a lot of coastline. Sarasota beaches have suffered no ill affect of the oil, which remained roughly 500 miles to the north of us. Honestly, Sarasota residents enjoyed a near perfect summer – beautiful weather, stunning beaches, crystal clear water…and no visitors. Actually, that last part was unfortunate, because truly, Sarasota remains a pristine spot along the Gulf.
The oil spill was and is a tragedy of disastrous proportion; its long term affects especially to marine and wildlife are yet to be determined. But as for oil-slicked beaches and water, that simply has not materialized here on Siesta, Lido, Casey or Longboat Key. If you are considering a trip to Sarasota this winter, be assured it is as beautiful as you remember.
