Hunger strikes families everywhere every day.
Food insecurity is defined as one’s availability of food and the access one has to it. About 1 in 6 Americans are food insecure according to the statistics provided by feedingamerica.org. This statistic grows even more alarming when we narrow the scope to only Floridians—23% of total food insecurity in our state alone.
The mayor of Sarasota has decided to take a stand against this horrifying reality and create a Feed the Hungry program for all hungry Floridians. This year The Orioles, while in Sarasota for their spring training, will be teaming up with the Mayor in his cause to stand up to this hungry monster that is food insecurity.
The Orioles are known for being philanthropic and heroic. Not only are children looking up to their favorite major league baseball stars because they have great talent, but because they also have great hearts. The OriolesREACH initiatives contribute to youth activities, charitable causes and civic priorities year-round.
This team, The Orioles and The Mayor, will be unstoppable at collecting donations to feeding Sarasota’s less fortunate. Last year they were able to collect over 14,000 meals for people. That is incredible! However, there were still mouths unfed. So this year, let us surpass last year’s generosities!
You can make donations starting on November 1st at the Ed Smith Stadium located at 2700 12th street, on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The collection station is located at the Euclid Avenue entrance, just south of Café 54. Bring all your non-perishable goods and your contribution will help us make sure that no adult or child in Sarasota and Manatee counties goes hungry. Now, if you can’t donate food, please come donate some time to help sort through all of the food on November 22 for Thanksgiving Sorting Day.
Since the beginning of this initiative in 1987, this all-volunteer 100% nonprofit organization has helped more than 390,000 people throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Come join this band of heroes, The Orioles, the Mayor and all of the other volunteers that are just like you any time starting November 1-November 22 between 9am and 5pm and bring your non-perishable foods.
Around the holidays people’s hearts are usually filling with joy and generosity, so let yours overflow just a bit and help out with this amazing effort to help feed people this holiday season!
